Description: This mouthpiece was the result of a joint venture between Ralph Morgan and the saxophone soloist David Bilger in the 1970s and 80s. The were available in the facing B-1 (close), M-2 (medium), R-3 (open) for classical playing, as well as BMJ-4 (0.066”) to BMJ-8 (0.082”) for jazz for alto. The tenor models were made with facings M-2 (medium), R-3 (open) for classical playing, and BMJ-5 (0.081”), BMJ-6 (0.090”), and BMJ-7 (0.105”) for tenor saxophone. After parting, both Bilger and Morgan produced mouthpieces under their own names.
Ralph Morgan (Elkhart, Indiana, 1924-2007) was a legendary mouthpiece maker who started playing saxophone professionally a the age of 12. He later enrolled at Wayne University in Detroit, Michigan, with a full saxophone scholarship. His father was chief woodwind designer for the Conn company. After WWII, Ralph Morgan started at the Selmer Co. in Elkhart, In., and later became their chief woodwind technician. After his retirement in 1980, Morgan started his own mouthpiece company. The top model Morgan mouthpieces were made from pure hard rubber with no synthetic additives, similar to hard rubber from the 1920-50s, and cast from own molds. B-stock mouthpieces feature the letter ‘B’ below the Morgan engraving.
Model: Protone
Sax: alto, tenor, baritone
Material: hard rubber
Chamber: large
Baffle: medium low
Description: These mouthpieces were hand finished by one of Ralph Morgan’s assistants. They differ from the regular jazz mouthpieces (‘M’ and ‘L’) in three main ways: 1) the hard rubber formula in the Protone’s is different in that it has a lower percentage of hard rubber (although still higher than in most mass-produced mouthpieces). 2) The Protone models have a horse-show shaped chamber (not used in the ‘M’, ‘L’, ‘E’, and ‘EL’ models). Protone mouthpieces were only made in one tip opening of 0.085”. Aside from these differences, the Protone mouthpieces (often considered the student line of Morgan mouthpieces) were crafted with the same care as the other Morgan mouthpieces.
